Gluten Free Diet: Foods to Avoid

Gluten Free Diet Foods

Once you begin reading food labels you learn very quickly that gluten can lurk in a number of unexpected places. We go into some of these surprise sources of gluten in another article, but let's start with the basics here. If you suffer from celiac sprue disease or autism and are seeking to improve your health and well-being through a gluten free diet, foods to avoid include but are not limited to the following most common glutenous foods:

  • Barley, malt
  • Wheat (in any form, or any component, such as bran, wheat germ, wheat protein or sprouted wheat)
  • Bouillon cubes
  • Oats, rye, kamut, spelt, triticale, semolina or other grains that could be cross-contaminated with wheat or barley
  • Starch (wheat, vegetable)
  • Graham flour
  • Soy sauce

Individuals with gluten sensitivity should avoid any product that is made from or includes these components. If possible, people who are allergic or highly sensitive should also steer clear of products that are manufactured in plants that process any of these ingredients.
